See the Good is all about collective care. We respect the privacy of the people who visit, use, and participate in the service. This notice explains what personal information we collect, why we use it, and the choices available to you.
1. Information we collect
Depending on how you use See the Good, we may collect:
- Contact information: an email address and, where needed for a card or cash-out, a mobile number.
- Card information: a card code, label, and description connected to a Me to You card.
- Contribution information: contribution amount, payment status, and related dates.
- Authorisation information: browser tokens, authorisation status, provider references, and records of authorisation events.
- Settlement information: payment, cash-out, settlement status, and provider response records where a settlement is requested.
- Content and communications: stories, photographs, messages, feedback, and correspondence you choose to share with us.
- Technical information: session and security information needed to keep the service working and to prevent misuse.
Information collected automatically
- IP address, browser type, and device information;
- website usage and session activity; and
- a cookie that lasts for up to one year. If you choose “remember this device”, we store a token in your browser for up to twelve months so you do not have to type your email every time you use your card. You can decline this, and clearing your browser data removes it.
2. How we collect information
We collect information when you submit a form, use a card or payment flow, contact us, or when a provider sends us a response needed to complete an action.
We may also create records as the service operates, including session records, signed browser tokens, payment events, settlement events, and security or audit records.
Administrators may enter information when they create or manage cards and beneficiary groups.
3. How the information collected is used
We use the information we collect to provide, operate, and protect See the Good and its payment-related services.
- Provide the service: operate cards, contributions, recurring payments, direct payments, and cash-outs.
- Connect activity: link payments, settlements, authorisations, cards, accounts, and beneficiary groups correctly.
- Support and protect people: respond to enquiries, prevent fraud and misuse, and maintain security records.
- Meet our responsibilities: keep financial and operational records, improve the service, and comply with legal requirements.
How we communicate with you
We may communicate with you by email, SMS, or other contact details you provide. We use these communications to confirm actions, provide service support, send security notices, respond to enquiries, and tell you about material changes to the service.
We do not use personal information to build advertising profiles or sell it to advertisers.
5. Storage and international processing
We store personal information in the databases and hosted systems used to operate See the Good. We may also store limited records with payment and technical providers where this is needed to provide the service.
We limit access to stored information to what is needed to operate, support, and protect the service. Some information may be stored or processed outside South Africa, as described below.
Some technical or payment providers may process information outside South Africa. We take reasonable steps to ensure that information sent to a provider is handled with appropriate confidentiality and protection.
6. Security
We use technical and organisational safeguards to protect your information. These include access controls, signed tokens, secure cookie settings, form protection, and audit records.
Access to information is limited to what is needed to operate and support the service. No online service can remove every risk, so please do not send sensitive information that See the Good has not asked for.
If we become aware of a security compromise affecting personal information, we will follow the notification requirements that apply to us.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files stored in your browser. See the Good also uses session storage, which allows the site to keep limited information while you use it.
How we use cookies
We use cookies and browser storage to remember an in-progress action, protect forms, and keep a payment flow connected to the right browser. They support the operation and security of the service. We do not currently use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Managing cookies
You can decline the optional “remember this device” setting. You can also manage or delete cookies and browser storage through your browser settings. Clearing your browser data removes stored tokens, but some parts of the service may no longer remember an in-progress action.
7. How long we keep information
We keep information for as long as it is needed to provide the service, complete or review a transaction, resolve a dispute, prevent misuse, meet legal obligations, or maintain an accountable record of financial movement.
Different records may be kept for different periods. Financial, payment, settlement, and audit records may need to be kept for longer than contact or browser information where they are needed for accountability, legal, or security purposes. We delete or de-identify information when we are no longer authorised or required to keep it.
8. Your rights
You may have certain rights under applicable law, including the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), or the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), in relation to the personal information we hold about you. In particular, you may have a legal right to:
- obtain confirmation as to whether we process personal information about you, receive a copy of your personal information, and obtain certain other information about how and why we process your personal information;
- request that your personal information be updated, amended, or rectified where it is inaccurate, and have incomplete personal information completed;
- receive information about how we process your personal information and ask questions about that processing;
- object to, or ask us to limit, particular processing where the law allows;
- request that we delete your personal information where:
- it is no longer necessary for the purposes for which it was collected and processed;
- our legal ground for processing is consent, you withdraw that consent, and we have no other lawful basis for the processing;
- our legal ground for processing is a legitimate interest pursued by us or a third party, you object to the processing, and we do not have overriding legitimate grounds;
- it has been unlawfully processed; or
- it must be erased to comply with a legal obligation to which we are subject.
- withdraw consent at any time where we process personal information based on consent, unless the personal information is processed to fulfil legal requirements.
You may contact us first using the address below. You may also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa if you believe your personal information has not been handled lawfully.
We may need to verify your identity before responding, and some requests may be limited by legal, security, or record-keeping requirements.
9. Children and sensitive information
Under POPIA, a child is a person under 18 years of age. POPIA generally prohibits the processing of a child’s personal information unless an exception applies, including prior consent from a competent person such as a parent or legal guardian.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18 years of age without prior permission from a competent person, such as a parent or legal guardian. See the Good is not directed at children under 18. Our website, services, and products are not intended for anyone under 18 without that permission and involvement.
Please do not send us sensitive personal information unless the service specifically asks for it and explains why it is needed.
10. Changes to this notice
We may update this notice when the service, the information we use, or the law changes. We will publish the updated notice here and change the effective date.
Changes take effect when published. The effective date at the top of this notice shows when it was last updated.
Where a change materially affects you, we will take reasonable steps to draw it to your attention.
